‘A walk through Oxford’

For this month the group abandoned the countryside in favour of the town. Jenny and Martin organised and led the walk which took us from Nuffield College, past old Morrell’s Brewery, to Oxford Castle. Here we spent a little while to look at the fabulous ‘the earth from the air’ exhibition.

From there the route took us in a large figure of eight along Bonn Square, Oxford Union, Ship Street taking a detour to visit Trinity College. Back through Brasenose Lane, the Sheldonian Theatre, Bridge of Sighs and into Holywell Street leading to Turf Tavern. The Tavern called for another brief stop to reflect just how many pints Dylan Thomas might have drunk here...?? Should we try ? But no, the consensus was to move on past New College into High Street . Here Jenny and Martin pointed out two houses, numbers 84 and 48. Number 84 being where Frank Cooper first sold his wife’s marmalade (she made 76 lbs of marmalade from an old recipe- just imagine!) and number 48 being William Morris’s first shop. From there a right turn into Merton Street led us back past the Examination School and various colleges into Broad Street and further west towards St. Giles before turning again towards the Cattle Market, arriving at our final destination for the morning – Jamie Oliver’s Restaurant. Here we did stop to enjoy a wonderful lunch and a well earned glass of wine.

A big thank you again to Jenny and Martin for organising this walk and enriching it by supplying us with a summary of interesting snippets of information.
